Dementia Care

Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses, which cause a progressive decline in a person’s mental functioning.  It is a broad term which describes a loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and normal emotional reactions.*
Nationally there has been a massive increase in the number of individuals diagnosed with dementia.  According to statistics published by Alzheimer’s Australia:

At least 60% of people in high care facilities and 30% of people in low care facilities have dementia.

An estimated 20 000 Australians currently have dementia.  An estimated 52 000 of these cases were diagnosed in 2005.

The risk of dementia increases with age.  Given the ageing of Australia's population, we can expect an increase in the number of people affected by dementia.

It is projected that over 730 000 people will have dementia by the year 2050 (unless there is a medical breakthrough).
